I found the reading to be a lot about the economics of the movie industry. It seems that a few big budget pictures had the blockbuster earning power to more than reimburse their producers as well as provide for the growing actor salaries. However, it seems that those that cost hundreds of millions of dollars don’t always prove to be the huge success and can severely damage the finances of the producers and their companies.
I found the movie Water world to be a little to Sci-Fi for main stream cinema. The references to evolution to out side the general audiences preferred viewing topics. I also found the portrayal of the dirt making in the floating city to be to be morbid. It seems to be more of a sea based Road Warrior than a new take on a post apocalyptic civilization.
Titanic on the other hand became an instant classic with action, adventure and a very emotional love story. A lot of creative detail in the scenes added to the effect that they were really on a large ocean liner and not a set. I especially noticed the scene when the boat was sinking and rose up on its end. It took a lot of time and care to get all the very small and passing details just right. Applying the reading to the two movies that both were big budget films but only Titanic was able to earn back its huge expenses.
