I agree with this author’s point of view, a disaster becomes a tragedy when having money can decide your survival. This was probably very typical of that time period. In Mexico many situations are also determined by your families’ name. Because if you are from a good family your children grow up around others of similar social positions, allowing them future access to the best employment and social opportunities.
