Import restrictions on films were mentioned in the reading as being a big issue in China right now. With severe import restrictions on most movies the actual percentage of foreign films is much lower than comparable nations. This site explains that China has placed a ban on animation in order to allow the Chinese domestic cartoon industry to have a chance to develop and compete. This is also designed to reduce the level of foreign popular culture that Chinese children are exposed to.

Nora - first, I must say that your choice of a Washington Post article made me a bit wistful because my hometown is quite close to D.C. Prior to reading your posting, I had not heard anything about the import restrictions in China - wow! In a cultural sense, I do not blame the Chinese for taking these drastic measures. I notice the article mentions nothing about the reaction of the U.S. film industry, but we should stay tuned - it should be very interesting!
