I found the look into the foreign movie making industry very interesting, I think that many American hear the words “Foreign Film” and the image of a low budget poor camera angles and effects come to mind. I have to admit I have been guilty of thinking the same thing. After reading the chapter though it seems that Hollywood’s dominance of the industry gives them the ability to out do most anything other countries can do. I also enjoyed learning about the Hong Kong film makers and their method of film making. It is interesting to see that they have set patterns for action and other movie genres. While like the book mentions, many foreign movies can require a deep understanding of the countries culture, it seems that U.S. films are design to be easily understood. I was once told that the evening news shows are written at 6th grade vocabulary in order to appeal to the largest possible demographic, it seems not unlike Hollywood’s approach to the international film market.
