Resource on the reading M#5

I found a resource that gets in to the down and dirty aspects of film casting. I found that its mention of how the “B-List actors” and other non top pay grade actors have agents who would rather have them working dead end roles rather than holding out for the career making role. It also discusses all of the pressure out side of the actor’s salary that makes it difficult for casting directors to get the actors that the production company wants. It also analyzes the importance of the big name actor when signing the rest of the cast and how difficult it can be getting those big names to commit. The legal aspect of the actor’s participation seems to be very important.

Nora, you chose a fascinating subject to explore. I read the article, and it is sad how political the film business has become. Agents always look out for their own interests, but an aspiring or lesser known actor really has little choice but to rely upon them for work, even if it is not the right project for them. I was appalled to read that in many cases, an agent cannot even pursue a leading actor without threat of legal action. The actors are not being harrassed, they are being offered an opportunity! More disturbing, though, is that so many leading actors refuse to take on an independent project just for the love for the art, or for the adventure of trying something new. They have become so insulated that it’s all about money and riding a high horse. They feel they are above accepting any less than a $20 million paycheck, or (heaven forbid) having to share a dressing room or car with others.

I really enjoy watching low budget independent films in which the artistic elements are strong. It does not matter to me if I have ever heard of the actors. Appreciation of the film is what is important to me as a viewer, not the notoriety of the people in it. Think of how many empty and awful films are made by leading actors because the only things important to them are the monetary and promotional benefits to them. If more leading actors were willing to participate alongside “B-list” and unknown actors in smaller productions, the latter group would have more opportunity to receive the exposure and recognition they deserve.
