I found this source on genres. The site has quite a lot of critical analysis of what a genre really is and how as a society we separate and identify different genres. It seems that we tend to often associate things with each other and categorize into general groups. I found some interesting research here that tries to analyze whether the separation of different genres is learned or something we are all born with.

Nora, that is quite a detailed source! Some of it is a bit technical, but I found the study on children to be particularly telling. It backs up the theory that genre identification is learned, in other words, we learn to recognize the distinguishing characteristics of different genres by viewing or reading films, books, etc. However, despite how a story is categorized by writers or filmmakers, the audience perception can vary from person to person. What one person perceives as science fiction might be considered fantasy by a second person, or horror by a third. Social background may influence individual perception to a large degree. I still feel though, that if you asked a large group of people of similar age and social background, to categorize a film into a genre, you would still get a few different answers. When it comes down to it, our perceptions and interpretations can be just as individual as we are.
