Romantic Comedy

This website has many very good insights about what a romantic comedy should be. It is interesting to know how difficult it can be for romantic comedies to achieve success as a comedy and still be sufficiently romantic for the audience. According to the site a romantic comedy is a mixture between a dramatic love stories with a little touch of humor.  To make a successful romantic comedy the writer needs to set a dramatic issue that later on will evolve around a love story. Thus, drama is an important key that needs to work as support for the story. One example given in this website is the movie “Sleepless in Seattle” The main issue played in this movie was a longing for that special someone and the satire of what “real people” (all of us) go through for a chance at love. And how sometimes love finds you where you least expect it.

Science Fiction

This site has changed my understanding of what science fiction really is. It is and in-depth look at the broader category called speculative fiction. The broad category of speculative fiction encompasses the subject of science fiction as well as others like fantasy. Its true definition if I understood the author’s point of view is fiction in a world that follows the general rules of science. He said that true Sci-Fi is science that speculates beyond what we now consider understood science. I now see it as a much smaller category than I did before, I feel now much of what I thought was Sci-Fi could be better classified as fantasy.

Nora, that is quite a detailed resource! I found the children’s study to be particularly telling. It backs up the theory that genre identification is learned, in other words, we learn how to categorize by reading and watching. However, I agree that perception can vary from person to person, and that social background is a strong influence. What one person considers science fiction might be perceived as fantasy by another, or horror by a third person. When it comes down it, our perceptions and interpretations of genre can be just as individual as we are.

I really liked your resource for the genre of romantic comedy. This happens to be one of my favorite types of movies. I enjoyed learning about why certain movies were put into this genre.

Your resource for Romanti comedy was great, I am a big fan of this type of film. I think being able to escape reality and delve into a love story now and then is important
