I found an interesting point of view on this site. I think it goes along with what the reading was about, that being the large scale commercialization of entertainment. The author has a some what negative view of the Disney theme parks. It seem that the author seems The parks Desire to be a fantasy wonderland is far from the claim to being an ambassador of the American culture. The company Disney that manages their parks are of course entrepreneurs who happen to be in the business of children’s entertainment. The necessity to attract the decision making adults is secondary if they can first convince the children. The author also draws comparisons of the theme park and others to the massive malls both of which are driven by the consumption culture.

Nora, I read the article and, although I understand the author’s concerns, he does overreact. I am not terribly crazy about Disney either, and agree with Mills that it has become far too big. It is everywhere, and “in your face”, which I find annoying as an adult. However, Disney was a big part of my life as a child, but I outgrew it, as most do. The author seems to feel there is something almost sinister about how Disney’s theme park attractions “immerse” their visitors in fantasy worlds, but after all, that is the idea. It is meant to be the ultimate entertainment experience for families, not reality. Adults know this, and the sense of reality for children is temporary, so I do not see where harm is done in this respect. Disney is no different from many other huge corporations when it comes to greed, impact on cities and neighborhoods (whether for better or worse), or negative effects on the environment. Some of us may not like it, but I do not think Disney is going away any time soon, so we either must accept or ignore it.
